Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop Continuing Education Programs for nurses working at medium sized hospitals with 200 to 500 beds. Samples consisted of 600 nurses employed at four hospitals located in Seoul and Kyunggi province. Data was collected from Oct. 16th, 2000 to Nov. 6th, 2000 using a structured, and an open-ended questionnaire.
The questionnaire of 28 items was developed by the researchers in consultation with nurses in charge of in-service education. The data was analyzed according to frequencies and percentile using SPSS program. The results of the study were as follows:
The desired topics for continuing education were emergency care, the electrocardiogram, electrolyte balance, intensive care nursing, and stress management for nurses. Other topics that the subjects chose were diabetic care, hemodialysis care, interpersonal communication skills, wound nursing, and hospice in this order. The head nurses of the hospitals and nurses with higher position favored the topics of nursing and marketing, improving communication skills, and stress management. This outcome indicates that nurses with higher position favored different types of education program which is more related to their position and responsibilities.
Based on the above results, the researchers developed seven different continuing education modules. They were emergency nursing, electrocardiogram, electrolyte balance, intensive care nursing, stress management for nurses, nursing and marketing. And the package program of preceptorship was added according to the policy of the school.
Suggestion is made that strategic approaches are needed in order for these continuing education packages to be actively implemented, such as advertising through the home page of the school, and marketing them via mail to mid-sized hospitals.
